Free rod-licence initiative to introduce newcomers to angling launches on Saturday 1st to run over two-week holiday period

The free rod-licence is worth up to £12.60 (for migratory fish).

Anglers will be able to take a friend fishing on the back of a free rod-licence for day as another Take a Friend Fishing Campaign launches over the Easter period.

The initiative initiative is run by the Angling Trades Association in association with the Environment Agency and supported by Angling Trust, Canal & River Trust and many other angling organisations. It means you can share your pastime with a friend, work colleague, family member or partner who may have either shown an interest in trying fishing, or simply wants to get out into the countryside, and escape the pressures of modern life, and enjoy the physical health benefits and mental wellbeing of fishing.

In 2022, over 6,000 people registered to take part in Take a Friend Fishing. This year, the campaign is being extended with an Easter campaign and more planned for later in the season.

Clive Copeland, Head of Participation at the Angling Trust, said “There are several key dates during our Spring into Fishing campaign between April and June when children and families can get out on our wonderful springtime fisheries. Take a Friend Fishing provides an incentive for existing fishing licence holding anglers to get back out on the bank again and introduce a newcomer giving us more opportunity to engage with an even wider community.”

The campaign runs from this Saturday (April 1) to Sunday, April 16, 2023 (inclusive). The idea is very simple: existing fishing licence holders can register for a FREE one-day fishing licence from the Environment Agency (which is a legal requirement in England and Wales), worth £6.50 (coarse and non-migratory trout) or £12.60 (salmon and sea trout).

There are many fisheries near to where you live that are perfect to visit for a catch-up with a friend during a Take a Friend Fishing trip together.
