Heilen basket

Heilen basket

The ‘A Team’, Ronald MacKenzie and Ray Millard have been in action again on Loch Heilen in Caithness, one of Scotland’s most enigmatic and challenging waters, writes Bruce Sandison. On Monday, June 7,  Ronald, fishing with Ray, produced a magnificent basket of two fish weighing a total of 15lb 5oz, the heaviest being a splendid trout of just under 9lb 2oz. The smaller fish – relatively speaking – took a Grey Wulff variant, tied that morning by Ronald, whilst the big fellow fell to a Scotsman.

Whilst fishing Heilen in June 2008, Ronald hooked and landed a specimen fish weighing 11lb 10oz, the trout of a lifetime and the heaviest brown trout ever taken from Caithness waters, and in May 2007 Ray caught a Heilen trout weighing 10lb 10oz, landed after a considerable struggle by his boat partner, Ronald.
