2015-16 Fly Tying League sponsored by The Angler’s Lodge at Jubilee Lakes

Test your fly-tying skills! Starting with the December 2015 issue, FF&FT’s unique 2015-16 Fly Tying League is open to fly tyers of all abilities and offers some superb fly-tying prizes, totalling almost £1,000 in value.

Running for the December issue and the next three following issues, fly tyers of all abilities, from any country can participate, choosing to enter either one of two grades – Novice or Open.

The Novice category is aimed at introducing any beginner to the art of fly tying. The Novice side of the competition is designed to introduce basic skills, tools and materials and get people tying flies to catch fish. To do this, we will be setting simple but effective foundation flies for which we will publish instructions in the magazine (page 68) supported by video-clips on the FF&FT website and on its Facebook page.

The Open category is for more experienced fly tyers and is designed to bring out and identify fly dressing skill, technique, and flair.

Each month, the entrants’ flies will be marked. These marks, for both the Novice and Open Leagues, will be entered and compiled into an on-going League, which will be updated every month. The League positions will be updated on the website as soon as the results are published.

Each round, the highest scoring entrants of the Novice and Open rounds will both win a prize. At the end of the four rounds, the top three fly-tyers of both Leagues win the overall prizes. (Note: prolonged entry dates to allow for overseas entrants).

As with last year, all entrants to both Leagues will receive a certificate of participation, indicating their overall position in the league. How well can you do? Your challenge starts here!

Overall league winners – Open and Novice categories

2nd place: Hareline Dubbin ‘blend your own’ dubbing kit.

3rd place: Fly Furniture rotary drier plus a bottle of Loon Hard Head

How to enter
Novice category

Each month we will set one pattern to be tied (the Set fly). We require three samples of the Set fly to be submitted to the address on the entry panel. You can ask questions about the fly and techniques to tie it on the Forum: HERE.

Open category
Pick any fly from the relevant issue of the magazine (your Choice fly), tie three samples of that fly. Then, for your creative fly take three materials from your Choice fly, add any other materials you need to create one Creative fly. The complete entry for the Open League is three examples of your Choice fly and one example of your Creative fly. Submit these (four flies) to the address on the entry panel.

The Choice fly should demonstrate the skills of the fly tyer; the Creative fly can be anything - a fishing fly, a fancy fly, but this month it must be tied in the style of a trout/grayling nymph.
All entries will be reviewed by the judge who will study and mark each fly individually for tying skill.

Sending entries
Send flies in a light, protective, re-sealable container (a hook-box is a good idea) along with a completed entry form.

Which category should I enter?
Are you a Novice? If you have been tying for three or more years you should enter the Open League, otherwise you should class yourself as a Novice.

If you are still learning about fly-tying materials, tools and skills you should enter the Novice section. Note: if the judge is so impressed by your fly-tying that he believes you are beyond ‘Novice’ he will automatically promote you to the Open League.
