Dear Colin Read your recent article in FF and FT magazine. The article described fishing from the shore of the British Isles. You mentioned fishing in Spain on the Costa Blanca at Torrevieja. Since I spend my winters on the Costa del Sol at Torremolinos (near Malaga), I am most interested in any info regarding fly fishing on the southern coast of Spain. In the past I’ve fished the rio frio near Loja on A92, but it’s like fishing in a tub of stocked trout. Hence my interest in fly fishing the spanish coast.

Hola Peter.
Areas likely to hold fish along the Spanish coast are very much the same as in British waters. By far the most productive marks of all are estuaries and this is where I would concentrate my efforts. A quick glance at a map of the Costa del Sol shows many rivers flowing into the Med. Some of these may be dry during the summer months and only produce sport during winter, once the rains have come. Once you have found a suitable river mouth, spend time getting to know the area, watching and learning as much as fishing, to determine where the fish are and how they are behaving. Fish will normally be seen feeding where the rivers flow runs into the sea and this is a good starting point. Mullet will be most active and a small brown or black nymph pattern drifted with the current will normally tempt them. Be aware that Spanish mullet can grow to considerable sizes and fight with incredible strength, so 10lb bs fluorocarbon is a must. A 7wt rod and floating line completes the set up. Bass, Palometta, Garfish and several other species of predatory fish are found around estuaries and all seem very partial to an olive/white or black/orange clouser. A yellow and white Deceiver is also worth a swim. Funnily enough I have had most success with bass on very small nymphs and even dry flies intended for mullet, a scenario which I am now experiencing in UK waters.
Visit the estuary at different stages of the tide. I know that the Med has very little in the way of tidal difference but what little there is can make a big difference to fish behaviour.
On the Costa Blanca, December is recognised as the prime month for Bass, when they enter the estuary area to feed on fry.
Also pay attention to any breakwaters constructed around the estuary mouth, as these are good fish holding areas. Pull a clouser parallel to the structure, only a few feet out and expect good sport with the aforementioned species.
I look forward to reading about your successes on the forum.
Hasta luego
Colin

Hi Colin,

What’s the situation with licences and permits for sea & estuaries in Spain? I found trout fishing in Galicia to be tricky, no one knew where and how to get the correct permits and licences even the agencies selling them.
Cheers,
IanB

Hi Ian,

Each region appears to be different. I asked at the local Tourist Information Office when fishing on the Costa Blanca and they informed me that a licence was not required to fish the sea shore.

Having toured N Spain and Portugal over the past few years,we thought ... of May if I can tear myself away from the fly fishing venues en-route.
