The recent heat wave has raised water temperatures nicely and the bass and mullet have responded by moving inshore. Had my first serious attempt of the season during a couple of evening sessions this week, producing two mullet and a large bass lost after some lightning runs through the shallows.
The fish are in!

Was out walking the dogs during a visit to my in-laws the other day (south coast) and saw lots of surface-feeding mullet. Naturally I didn’t have my rod with me at the time (and the next time I was able to return, the tide and conditions were totally different; with no fish around).

I might get one more chance before returning home to the North…

How frustrating Paul. I hope you get that second chance.

Nothing large but had my first salty sea trout last week. My friend had a mackerel while we were looking for the sea trout. Not a huge success, but our first steps into salt water fly fishing. We were quite happy with the result.

Cheers,
C.

Well done to you both. Not everyone catches the first time they dip their toes in the salt.

Hi Truchavieja (old trout?),
All the areas you mention are worth a visit. As long as the weather remains reasonably warm and settled then school bass should be around for a few weeks yet and smaller groups of more mature fish for a good month or more. Golden grey mullet remain inshore into October. Sandy beaches and bays are a good place to look for them. Thick lipped mullet numbers reduce as the month goes on, with the smaller fish heading for winter feeding grounds. Larger mullet stay inshore to feed until the end of October or beyond, if water temperatures are maintained and are more inclined to chase a fly as they look to put on weight for the long, lean winter.
In a nut shell….keep on fishing while the weather is good.
Tight lines, Colin

This is my first attempt, so I hope I’m doing the right thing, and apologies if I’m barging into the ‘wrong waters’.

I’ve done some saltwater fly fishing abroad, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but never fished for mullet or bass in the UK (which is pretty stupid, I admit).

It’s now September, have I left it too late or has the hot summer meant water temperatures will stay high for longer? I’d really like to try some bass /mullet fishing this year !

Any advice much appreciated. I’m based in Bristol, so could head west into Wales, south to Cornwall or east to the south coast.

Truchavieja

PM sent.

If you stand up to your knees in the river and you can see your feet then it’s good fly water otherwise it’s worm and spin.

I am so pleased that you enjoyed your day, tv.
Hopefully the mullet will stick next time.
