Thread carefully

By Magnus Angus

Magnus Angus shows how your tying thread colour can affect the appearance of the fly body

This is my attempt at an object lesson in fly body colour. These two fly bodies are the same but for the underlying thread. One is tied tied with black thread the other with pale yellow.

The dubbing is a fine synthetic. The fibres are translucent when the dubbing is dry, and become almost transparent when wet. Tie with dark thread (the fly on the left) and you get a darker fly; with a light thread a brighter effect. Use red or orange thread under your lighter dubbings and you may get touch of red showing through your fly body.
