Wm Salter and Grandson
From Wm. Salter and Grandson, the Tribute looks like a classic reel and with one or two small modern concessions this is made as a classic reel.
A very rigid full-cage body, a few ventilation holds on the back-plate show the pawls inside. And inside this has a classic twin-pawl check on the backplate which applies a croaky check in both directions – a bit more going out than coming in – pressure from the spring can be adjusted by the small knob on the backplate, flick the position of the pawls to change direction of the check.
On the face of the spool, the small but shapely handle looks great, looks like classic bone but is in fact a rather good man-made substitute. Opposite the handle a small brass counter-weight balances the spool and carries the MTC logo of the British engineers who machined and assembled this reel – a nice touch.
Look inside the spool and this has a large arbour – a pleasing modern touch. I’m guessing that if this had a traditional spool if would take a #7 line? In this version it takes a #5 with some backing. The Tribute weighs 4.9 oz, which is not that heavy at all. In that hand this feels (and looks) heavier than it is, that small, dark, solid build gives a misleading impression of a heavier mass where more holes let through more light and a reel can look lighter than it is.
This looks the part on the butt of a more traditional rod, but in terms of function can hold its own on any #5 rod. Supplied in a suede pouch. Many nice touches about this ‘old school’ British-made reel.
