The aluminium body and spool of this reel are cast rather than machined. Casting aluminium is cheaper than machining, and creates a lot less waste. On the down-side, cast alloy reels tend to be a little heavier than similar sized machined reels – this weighs 185g which is slightly heavy for a reel this size. Cast parts are, we are told, slightly weaker than machined alloy. The thing is, trout very rarely pull hard enough to bend or break a reel. I, on the other had, can damage a reel, any reel, by dropping it, crushing it, or lending it to friends.

The silver finish here is a coating, and is not perfect. I can see a few wee bumps and lumps – cosmetic flaws which have no effect on function.
Inside the Silver Shadow lies a smooth little disc-drag with a one-way bearing in the spool, acting as a clutch. To switch direction of wind turn the bearing – easy job.

It may not be the most refined reel I’ve handled, but it’s perfectly serviceable. The drag is good, the spool fits tight, and the spool is well enough finished so backing and fly line are held safe and sound.
