The dished handle face on this reel is very attractive indeed. Mill Tackle is a new, young UK company, and sourcing product in the UK is a key component in its business plan.
This has classic looks, but it does not look like any classic reel I know. Inside, a single pawl acts as a click-check as line is pulled off the reel, rising to a classic 'scream' as line is stripped off, as I wind line in the same pawl clicks steadily.
The spool has a large arbour, which is modern on fly reels. If I set this next to an old British reel this spool is a fair bit deeper front to back than the narrow old spool, which was more typical. That width adds back line-capacity lost to the arbour, so this can handle 3 and 4-weight fly lines.
The reel is aluminium and brass with a horn handle. Machined from barstock, the finish is excellent and the tolerances are tight, the makers mention that the aluminium has a “High-micron clear anodized finish.” I take it that means deep anodised for durability.
This arrived in a fleece-lined leather case – very nice. The spool is screwed to the body – Mill Tackle provide a special, three-pronged key needed to take the spool off the body of the reel.
A very good looking blend of modern and classic forms, classic materials, modern machines and finishing processes – great attention to detail!
Price: £400 supplied in “a bespoke leather case”, each reel is individually numbered.
