Patagonia turns Black Friday Green

In today's consumer-driven society, Black Friday has become a key word and moment in most companies' annual drive for profit. Not, however, if you are Patagonia. The company that prides itself on its sustainability and green values has bucked the Western world trend by stating that, this Black Friday, 100% of its global sales from its retails stores and Patagonia.com will be donated to grass-roots environmental organisations.

For many years, Patagonia has made a donation of 1% of its profits to help save the planet (which, today, equates to a total $74million); this initiative takes the concept much, much further.

“We wanted to do something on Black Friday to make a big statement, to fund grass-roots activism and engagement,” Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario said. “We shouldn’t let anyone of any political stripe destroy our planet.”

As most companies are hell-bent on sales and turnover in the lead-in the Christmas, Patagonia is also opening a Patagonia Thrift Shop onThursday 24 and Friday 25 at Village Underground in Shoreditch, offering fully repaired, second-hand Patagonia goods from £5 – £80 each.

Amongst the beneficiaries of the Black Friday scheme in UK will be: Save the Conwy, Surfers Against Sewage, People & Planet and London Waterkeeper.
